What is the 3/4/5 rule in craps?

6/6/2025

The "3/4/5 rule" in craps refers to the maximum odds bets that can be placed on a Pass Line bet (or Come bet) after a point is established. It's a common betting limit at casinos, where you can bet up to 3 times your Pass Line bet for the numbers 4 and 10, 4 times for 5 and 9, and 5 times for 6 and 8.

Here's a breakdown:
  • Pass Line Bet:
This is your initial bet on the table, and if the point number is rolled before a 7, you win.
  • Odds Bet:
Once a point number is established, you can place an odds bet behind your Pass Line bet. The odds bet pays out at the true odds of the point number, which is higher than the 1:1 payout of the Pass Line bet.
  • 3/4/5 Rule:
This rule dictates the maximum amount you can bet in odds. For example, if you bet $10 on the Pass Line and a 6 is rolled, you can bet up to $50 in odds, which is 5 times your original bet.
  • Different Tables:
Some tables might have different maximum odds, like 2x or even 10x, but 3/4/5 is a common and easily remembered limit.

Why is it called "3/4/5"?

It's a simple way to remember the maximum odds limits:
  • 4 and 10: You can bet up to 3 times your Pass Line bet.
  • 5 and 9: You can bet up to 4 times your Pass Line bet.
  • 6 and 8: You can bet up to 5 times your Pass Line bet.

Example:
If you bet $10 on the Pass Line and a 6 is rolled, you can bet up to $50 in odds (5 times your Pass Line bet).

Important Note: The 3/4/5 rule is a betting limit, not a payout. The payouts on odds bets are determined by the true odds of the point number, not the 3/4/5 rule
